Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
