Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
