Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
